Born in Florence on August 14, 1875, and passing away in Rome on September 4, 1956, Gino de Martino was an Italian tennis player and sports administrator from a noble family holding the title of Count. He notably served as the inaugural president of the Italian Lawn Tennis Association in 1894. The following year, alongside his brother Uberto, he secured the distinction of being the first Italian champion in both singles and doubles.
In 1911, de Martino made history as the first Italian to compete in a Grand Slam tournament, participating at Wimbledon. Despite being eliminated in the first round, he achieved a significant victory that same year by defeating Anthony Wilding, the reigning Wimbledon champion. Additionally, he reclaimed the Italian national championship title in 1911, showcasing his enduring impact on Italian tennis during his career.
