Gabriele D'Annunzio

Introduce

Gabriele D’Annunzio, born Gabriele d’Annunzio (Pescara, March 12, 1863 – Gardone Riviera, March 1, 1938), was an Italian writer, poet, playwright, soldier, politician, journalist, and patriot, symbol of decadence and a celebrated figure of the First World War, bestowed with the title of Prince of Montenevoso by King Vittorio Emanuele III in 1924.

Nicknamed “il Vate” (similarly to Giosuè Carducci), meaning “sacred poet, prophet,” and also known as “the Imaginative,” he held a prominent position in Italian literature from around 1889 to 1910 and in politics from 1914 to 1924. He has been described as an “exceptional and ultimate interpreter of the most enduring Italian poetic tradition.” As a political figure, he left a mark on his era and exerted a significant influence on subsequent events.

His art was so influential on mass culture that it shaped customs and habits in Italy – and beyond – during his time, a period later termed “Dannunzianism.”
