Plymouth XX-500: the start of the Ghia – Chrysler partnership.
The Plymouth XX-500 Ghia was a unique prototype vehicle created in 1950 as part of an experimental project initiated by Chrysler President K.T. Keller. During the postwar era, Keller sought a more economical way to develop prototype and experimental vehicles, and Italy’s struggling economy, combined with its wealth of car-making expertise, offered an ideal solution. As a result, Keller commissioned two cars to be built on Plymouth chassis, one by Carrozzeria Ghia and another by Pininfarina, to test the quality of their work. While the car crafted by Pininfarina impressed Keller, it was Ghia’s craftsmanship that stood out as superior. As a result, all future work for Chrysler’s prototyping efforts was awarded to Carrozzeria Ghia. The body design of the Plymouth XX-500 was notably inspired by the 1949 Concorso d’Eleganza di Villa d’Este-winning Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Berlina, which had been designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Ghia. The influence of this elegant design can be seen in the smooth, flowing lines of the Plymouth XX-500, which reflected a blend of American and Italian automotive artistry. The XX-500 was unveiled by Ghia at the 1950 Turin Auto Salon, showcasing the Italian craftsmanship and innovative design that Ghia was known for. This one-off prototype served as an example of Chrysler’s interest in European-style coachbuilding and marked the beginning of a fruitful relationship between Chrysler and Carrozzeria Ghia, which would continue throughout the 1950s and beyond. Though the Plymouth XX-500 never went into production, its creation was significant as part of Chrysler’s larger efforts to develop more stylish and unique vehicles. The collaboration between Chrysler and Ghia paved the way for future iconic designs, with the Plymouth XX-500 standing as an early example of this important partnership in automotive history.
