The Partnership between Pininfarina & Lancia
A short history about the partnership between Pininfarina and Lancia, and the design evolution.
Lancia Gamma Scala by Pininfarina.
The Lancia Gamma Scala was a unique and elegant concept car, a four-door sedan derived from the Lancia Gamma Coupé and based on the Berlina platform. It was designed by Pininfarina as a refined reinterpretation of the Gamma line, aiming to combine the stylish flair of the coupé with the practicality of a sedan. Unveiled at the 1980 Paris Motor Show, the Gamma Scala featured a distinct front end with four square headlamps, replacing the twin rectangular units found on the standard Berlina, lending it a more modern and upscale appearance. Despite its appealing aesthetics and balanced proportions, the Gamma Scala never entered production. It remained a one-off concept, as Lancia ultimately chose not to proceed with Pininfarina’s proposal. The Scala was part of a broader vision by the famed coachbuilder to enrich the Gamma family with variants that could enhance its market presence. With a clean, well-proportioned silhouette and subtle luxury touches, the Scala was more than just a styling exercise—it was a serious bid to diversify the Gamma range. Pininfarina also developed two other Gamma-based concepts: the Lancia Gamma Spider, an open-top two-door, and the Lancia Gamma Olgiata, a rare shooting brake that blended sportiness with utility. These creations demonstrated Pininfarina’s desire to expand Lancia’s design horizons, though none made it beyond the prototype stage. The Gamma Scala’s story didn’t end in obscurity. In 2007, the one and only model was recovered from the UK and brought back to Italy by Roman collector Francesco Vallucci, preserving this piece of automotive history. Notably, the Scala was not Pininfarina’s only sedan concept derived from a coupé—the 1974 Fiat 130 Opera followed a similar philosophy. Today, the Gamma Scala stands as a graceful symbol of design ambition and unfulfilled potential.
