Fiat 1200 Cabriolet
The Fiat 1200 Cabriolet designed by Pininfarina.
Vehicle Overview
The Fiat 1200 Cabriolet, designed by Pininfarina, was unveiled in 1959 as a successor to the 1200 Trasformabile. Despite its official name, the 1200 Cabriolet was a true 2-seater spider, showcasing a more refined and minimalist design compared to its predecessor. This new styling echoed the lines of the contemporary Ferrari 250 GTE, giving the Fiat 1200 Cabriolet a touch of elegance and sophistication. Fiat chose the reliable 1200cc engine for the new Cabriolet, ensuring a blend of performance and efficiency. The car made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1959, capturing the attention of enthusiasts and critics alike with its sleek design and engineering. Although the Pininfarina badge adorned the Fiat 1200 Cabriolet, indicating the esteemed designer’s involvement, the car was actually assembled in the “Carrozzerie Speciali Officine Lingotto” section of Fiat’s Turin facility. This assembly process was carried out manually, employing methods akin to those of traditional coachbuilders. This artisanal approach resulted in a limited production run of about 500 units, making each car a unique and meticulously crafted piece. The clean and elegant lines of the Fiat 1200 Cabriolet set it apart in a market often cluttered with more ostentatious designs. The influence of Pininfarina’s work was evident in the car’s aesthetics, which balanced simplicity with a subtle touch of luxury. However, it is important to note that while Pininfarina was responsible for the design, the actual production and assembly were handled internally by Fiat.
