Ferrari 328 GTB

The Ferrari 328 GTB designed by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 328 GTB is a sports car produced by Ferrari from 1985 to 1989. It was the successor to the Ferrari 308 GTB and GTS, with small updates made to both the bodywork and engine. One of the key changes was an increase in engine displacement to 3185 cm³. Like its predecessors, the 328 had a rear-engine layout and a five-speed manual transmission. In total, 7,400 units of the 328 were produced before it was replaced by the Ferrari 348 in 1989, bringing the total number of 308/328 models to nearly 20,000. The first 328 produced was a GTS model in Metallic Blue, equipped with the same interior as the 308 GTSi Quattrovalvole. This prototype model is considered to be almost the final version of the 328 series. Enthusiasts regard the 328 as one of Ferrari’s most reliable cars, with relatively accessible maintenance compared to other models. One of the major advantages of the 328 was the ease of servicing the timing belts without the need to remove the engine. The “GTB” designation stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta (a coupé), while “GTS” refers to Gran Turismo Spider (a Targa-style vehicle). When introduced in 1985, the 328 was priced between $58,400 and $62,500 in the United States. Both the 328 GTS and GTB featured Ferrari’s naturally aspirated, transverse-mounted V8 engine, which had a displacement of approximately 3.2 liters and produced 270 horsepower at 7,000 rpm. The car featured independent suspension, disc brakes, and hydraulic shock absorbers with anti-roll bars both at the front and rear. The 328’s design was a refinement of the 308, with a softer, more modern appearance. It featured redesigned front and rear ends, with a color-matched bumper and a larger front grille, similar to that of the Ferrari Mondial. The interior also saw upgrades, including a new seating design and dashboard, along with various optional features like air conditioning and a leather-wrapped dashboard. In 1988, ABS became available as an option, which necessitated a redesign of the suspension and wheels. The Ferrari 328 GTB and GTS were sold in various markets, with modifications such as left or right-hand drive. The engine was essentially the same as that of the 308 Quattrovalvole but with a displacement increase. The Ferrari 328 continues to be highly regarded as a timeless classic and a symbol of Ferrari’s commitment to performance and design.
