The DAF Kini Beach Car is a remarkable one-of-a-kind creation, designed and built by the renowned Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti in 1966. Based on the chassis of a DAF Daffodil, this unique vehicle was originally crafted with a royal purpose in mind. It was intended as a special gift for the Dutch royal family to celebrate the birth of Prince Willem-Alexander, now King of the Netherlands. The car’s name, “Kini,” is derived from the Bavarian word for “King,” underscoring its regal connection. Michelotti’s design for the Kini Beach Car is a bold and imaginative interpretation of a classic beach car, showcasing vibrant colors and playful styling that evoke the carefree spirit of seaside driving. While its unconventional appearance might not suit every taste, its originality and innovative design clearly shine through. The Kini’s styling takes inspiration from Michelotti’s earlier work, particularly the FIAT Shellette, blending functionality with a distinctive aesthetic. The vehicle was built to be practical for summer drives while also standing out as a visually striking piece of automotive art. Today, the DAF Kini Beach Car holds a cherished place in the DAF Museum in Eindhoven, serving as a tribute to Michelotti’s creativity and the innovative legacy of the DAF brand. Its historical significance is further highlighted by its prominent role on King’s Day in Eindhoven. In a memorable moment, King Willem-Alexander drove the Kini Beach Car with his eldest daughter, Princess Amalia, by his side to kick off the ‘Mobility Caravan’ celebrations. As part of a special exhibition, the Kini Beach Car was displayed alongside other iconic DAF vehicles, such as the first-produced DAF 600, the VD60 truck chassis with an engine, the military DAF Pony, and the famed Eindhoven VIPRE trailer bus. This temporary exhibit ran from June 9 to June 30, 2021, spotlighting the innovative spirit and rich history of DAF’s automotive contributions. The Kini Beach Car remains a captivating symbol of 20th-century design ingenuity, celebrated not only for its royal connections but also for its enduring place in automotive history.
