The Alfa Romeo Duetto, unveiled in 1966, was powered by a 1600 cc, all-alloy twin-cam four-cylinder engine, featuring dual Weber carburetors that produced 108 horsepower. This lively powertrain was paired with a fairly conventional chassis, but its handling was exceptional due to Alfa Romeo’s precise engineering. The car’s finely tuned damping, independent front suspension, and well-located rear axle contributed to its sharp, responsive driving dynamics, making it a joy to handle on the road. Unlike the Giulia Coupe, which was designed by Bertone, the elegant Duetto was penned by Pininfarina, marking a departure in styling from its Alfa Romeo siblings. Its design was heavily inspired by Pininfarina’s earlier concepts, the Super Flow IV and the Spider Speciale, which helped shape the Duetto’s distinctive look. Notably, this project was the last one that the company’s founder, Battista “Pinin” Farina, personally oversaw before his death, and he took great pride in the final result. The Duetto’s design is celebrated for its clean lines, with minimal chrome detailing that emphasizes its sculptural bodywork. The most iconic feature is its tapering, rounded tail, which gives the car a unique and graceful silhouette. This minimalist and aerodynamic design made the Duetto an instant classic, standing out even among the highly competitive sports car market of the 1960s. For many Alfa Romeo enthusiasts, known as “Alfisti,” the Duetto represents the purest and most desirable form of the Alfa Spider.
