Introduced in 1954, it was born out of a fortuitous circumstance when Alfa Romeo, facing delays in launching their new Giulietta model, turned to Nuccio Bertone to create a coupe version of the 1300. When unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1954, the Giulietta Sprint immediately captured the public’s imagination. Originally planned for a production run of 1,000 units, the overwhelming reception saw 700 reservations taken on the spot. Bertone swiftly adapted to the demand, transforming from a bodywork specialist to a full-fledged car manufacturer practically overnight. Production commenced at Bertone’s factory on Corso Peschiera, and eventually moved to the larger Grugliasco plant to accommodate the high demand. From 1954 to 1965, nearly 40,000 units of the Giulietta Sprint were produced in various configurations, powered by either a 1290 cc or 1570 cc engine. The success of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint not only solidified its place in automotive history as a pioneer of the modern GT (Grand Tourer) concept but also marked a significant milestone for Bertone, showcasing their ability to create popular and influential car designs.
