Alfa Romeo BAT 5
Chassis
The Alfa Romeo Bertone B.A.T. (Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica) are a group of concept cars built by Alfa Romeo and Bertone between 1953 and 1955. The family is formed of B.A.T. 5 (1953), B.A.T. 7 (1954) and B.A.T. 9 (1955), all three designed by Franco Scaglione on the chassis of the Alfa Romeo 1900.
Vehicle Overview
The Alfa Romeo BAT 5 was the first car to appear which was launched at the Turin Motor Show 1953. The design of the model was the result of many aerodynamic studies and empirical knowledge. The shape of the front, in fact, aims to cancel aerodynamic turbulence at high speeds. The design of the Alfa Romeo BAT 5 (by Franco Scaglione) also aims to eliminate any additional resistance generated by the wheels, as well as the construction of a structure that can create the least possible number of air turbulences to ensure stability at high speed. In practice, these strict criteria translate into a Cx of 0.23 which would allow the car to reach 200 km / h with the engine fitted as standard. The result that Bertone achieved was an extremely light car (only 1100 kg), with side windows angled at 45 ° with respect to the car body and a large windshield that integrates perfectly with an almost flat roof. The most striking part is certainly the tail which sports a huge rear window divided by a thin strip of sheet metal, later taken from the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, and two “fins” slightly tapered inwards, for a very personal aesthetic result. The Alfa Romeo BAT 5 was an instant success that impressed the public with its remarkable aerodynamics and “stage presence”.
