The Abarth 750 Goccia concept car, conceived by Vignale in 1957 on the mechanical platform of the Abarth 750, sparked considerable curiosity and interest within the automotive world. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, the Goccia (Drop) made its striking debut at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, captivating audiences with its distinctive and futuristic design language. The prototype boasted a remarkably short and sloping front end, seamlessly integrated with the windshield, along with gull-wing doors and a uniquely styled elongated rear. Under the guidance of Vignale, Abarth proudly presented a car that possessed all the qualities to be considered revolutionary, serving as an inspirational precursor to the Fiat 600D Sperimentale introduced several years later. Despite its avant-garde design, however, the Goccia was never envisioned for production, perhaps due to its radical departure from conventional automotive aesthetics. Powered by a 747cc inline-four engine equipped with a Weber 32 IMPE carburetor, the Abarth 750 Goccia generated a maximum output of 43 horsepower at 5800 rpm. Coupled with a smooth four-speed manual transmission and its aerodynamic shape, the car achieved a top speed of 150 km/h. With a total weight of just 550 kilograms and a chassis featuring hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers and drum brakes on all four wheels, the Goccia promised an exhilarating driving experience. Although one example was produced specifically for the Mille Miglia, the car faced significant cooling issues during the race, which led Fiat executives to redirect their efforts towards Zagato-bodied models. Despite participating in prestigious events such as the Targa Florio and the Tour de Corse, the Goccia struggled to showcase its full potential on the race track. Today, one of the three remaining prototypes has been spotted in Japan, where its owner, as reported by Scorpion Magazine, appreciates its nimble handling and well-balanced performance on the country’s mountainous roads. Following the innovative concept of the Abarth 750 Goccia, Giovanni Michelotti revisited the idea with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Goccia. This new iteration carried forward the essence of the original design while adapting it to the distinctive characteristics of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.
