Fiat Cinquecento Z-Eco

The Fiat Cinquecento Z-Eco concept by Zagato.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat Cinquecento Z-Eco was unveiled alongside the launch of the Cinquecento, with Fiat inviting various design houses to reimagine the city car. Among these, Zagato crafted the Cinquecento Z-Eco. The concept aimed to merge traditional four-wheel mobility with alternative “soft” transportation options, envisioning a scenario where urban dwellers could park their cars and switch to bicycles for navigating traffic-free historic city centers. It was a two-seater equipped with an integrated bicycle rack. The concept was simple yet innovative: taking the already compact Fiat Cinquecento, reimagining its structure to create a space conducive for “the last mile” commute. While today an electric scooter might fit the bill better, back then, this solution was revolutionary. The car offered an intriguing solution for rear passengers, extending legroom to align with the driver’s seat by widening the cockpit area. A bicycle, securely attached through specially designed slots beside the right window, became a distinctive feature of the vehicle’s design. Zagato also revised certain design elements of the Fiat Cinquecento, notably the rear, which now boasted a gently sloping tail reminiscent of an egg, and the inclusion of a spoiler, serving more aesthetic than practical purposes. However, safety concerns prevented widespread adoption of the Fiat Cinquecento Z-Eco. Issues such as the lack of mirrors on the right side and the bicycle obstructing visibility posed significant challenges. In a contemporary context, the integration of rear cameras could mitigate these concerns. Nevertheless, doubts lingered regarding weight distribution and cornering performance, making it clear that the car wouldn’t excel in high-speed scenarios. Nonetheless, its attributes, including easy parking and distinctive design, would undoubtedly have appeal.
