The Warzawa Wagon prototype by Carrozzeria Ghia from 1959.
The Warzawa Wagon by Ghia is one of the most fascinating and mysterious prototypes in the history of the post-war Polish automotive industry. For the first time in Eastern Bloc countries, world-class Western designers were commissioned to create and build prototypes for a new body style. These prototypes were designed with the aim of modernizing an aging Polish car, but after being delivered, they mysteriously vanished. Aside from a handful of witnesses, no one ever saw the Warzawa Wagon prototypes again, leading to a sense of intrigue and speculation. The history of the Warzawa Wagon is better known. In the late 1950s, during a brief period of political thaw, a group of FSO (Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych) designers, headed by Karol Pionnier, recognized the need to modernize their existing vehicle, the Warzawa. The Warzawa was already outdated by the end of the 1950s, and its design no longer met the standards of the time. As part of the modernization effort, FSO began working on a new engine, the overhead valve S-21, and sought to update the vehicle’s body design as well. To achieve this, the Polish manufacturer turned to Ghia, an elite Italian coachbuilder renowned for its exceptional design and craftsmanship. Ghia’s expertise was unparalleled, and they were tasked with creating both a sedan and a station wagon version of the Warzawa. The result was two stunning prototypes that were far ahead of their time. These vehicles featured sleek, modern lines and a level of craftsmanship that appeared almost otherworldly compared to other cars of the era. The Warzawa Wagon, with its striking design, captured the essence of European luxury, yet it never reached mass production. Instead, it became a mystery that still captures the imagination of car enthusiasts and historians today.
