The The misterious Warzawa Saloon prototype by Carrozzeria Ghia.
The Warzawa sedan by Ghia is one of the most intriguing and enigmatic prototypes in the history of the post-war Polish automotive industry. For the first time in Eastern bloc countries, a prestigious Italian design studio was hired to create prototypes of a new body. The Ghia team was commissioned by the Polish manufacturer FSO (Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych), marking a significant milestone in the region’s automotive design. However, after their creation, and despite a few dozen witnesses, the prototypes mysteriously disappeared, leaving only fragments of their story behind. The story of the Warzawa Saloon Ghia is more widely known and has become part of automotive folklore. In the late 1950s, as a result of a political thaw, a group of FSO designers, led by Karol Pionnier, set out to modernize the outdated and aging Warzawa model. The car was an important product for the factory, but by this time, it was severely out of date. The modernization project aimed to revamp both the vehicle’s mechanical components and its design. To accomplish this, FSO turned to Ghia, the renowned Italian design studio, to create a new body design for the Warzawa. Ghia was one of the top design houses of the time, known for its impeccable style and craftsmanship. The two cars Ghia produced—one Warzawa Saloon and the other a station wagon—were far ahead of their time. With sleek lines and a sophisticated design that seemed to come from another world, these prototypes were a visual testament to Ghia’s prowess in automotive design. They were not only beautiful but also reflected a level of engineering that made them stand out among Eastern European vehicles of the era. Unfortunately, despite their striking beauty, the prototypes vanished, and the Warzawa Ghia remains a mystery to this day.
