Sergio Sartorelli: Designer of Dreams
Designer Sergio Sartorelli was born in Alessandria in 1928; he took the degree in Mechanical Engineering at the “Politecnico” of Turin and soon became interested in cars.
The Warzawa sedan by Ghia is one of the most interesting and mysterious prototypes of the post-war Polish automotive industry. For the first time in the history of Eastern bloc countries, world-class Western stylists were commissioned to design and build prototypes of the body. They were commissioned and … with the exception of perhaps a few dozen witnesses, no one ever saw them again.
The Warzawa Saloon Ghia’s history is widely known. Taking advantage of the political thaw at the end of the 1950s, a group of FSO designers led by Karol Pionnier – the main constructor, decided to modernize the basic and already very obsolete product of the factory – Warzawa. As part of these activities, the construction of a more modern, overhead valve S-21 engine was commenced and the design of the sedan and station wagon body was ordered from the Italian coachbuilder Ghia. It was one of the best design studios at the time, and it delivered two cars to the country with a beauty and a level of workmanship like from another world.
