The Volvo 264 TE limousine by Bertone
The Volvo 264 TE, unveiled at the 1976 Paris Motor Show, represents a notable example of luxury and craftsmanship in the automotive world. This model, a stretched limousine variant of the Volvo 264, featured an extended wheelbase of 3,430 mm (135 inches) and was designed to accommodate seven passengers in comfort and style. Although it made its public debut in Paris, production of the 264 TE had actually begun earlier. The transformation of the Volvo 264 into the 264 TE was carried out by Bertone in Grugliasco, Italy. The process involved sending raw bodies from Sweden to Bertone, where they were lengthened, reinforced, and finished to meet the specifications for this luxury model. This collaboration between Volvo and Bertone combined Swedish engineering with Italian design finesse, resulting in a vehicle that stood out for its elegance and exclusivity. The 264 TE was a notable luxury vehicle of its time, distinguished by its three rows of seating. The central row was particularly spacious and comfortable, offering a higher level of comfort compared to typical limousines. The interior featured plush velvet upholstery and a high-fidelity sound system with an electrically operated antenna, along with electric window lifts, enhancing the overall luxury experience. With a production run starting in 1975, the Volvo 264 TE saw a total of 335 units built. It was notably used by Swedish royalty, including Carl XVI Gustaf, and also found favor among the political elite of East Germany, reflecting its high status and appeal. As Volvo’s first six-cylinder V-engine vehicle, the 264 TE not only showcased advanced engineering but also highlighted Bertone’s expertise in creating bespoke luxury vehicles.
