Volkswagen Type 1
This is the Frua-bodied VW Type 1 (Beetle 1200). It is known both as the Italsuisse Volkswagen and the Volkswagen Sun Valley. The coachbuilt special was unveiled in 1960. The plan was to put it into limited production. There was interest from Israel and a Porsche dealer in Florida – who wanted to be the distributor in the USA. Sadly, VW had long since stopped suppling the chassis to coach builders such as Frua. Obvioulsy, VW wasn’t about to help a competitor to their own Karmann Ghia. Also, the new Type 34 Karmann Ghia was already on the way, having been given the go ahead in 1959. So the Pietro Frua designed Sun Valley was doomed…
