Volkswagen Scirocco
The Volkswagen Scirocco designed by Italdesign Giugiaro.
Vehicle Overview
The Volkswagen Scirocco, a sleek and stylish sports coupe, owes its existence to the creative mind of designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. While deeply involved in the development of the VW Golf, Giugiaro envisioned the potential of creating a sports coupe using the same platform. Eager to bring his idea to life, he collaborated with the German coachbuilder Karmann to transform his vision into reality. Giugiaro’s initial designs for the coupe were presented to the Volkswagen management as a potential successor to the VW Karmann-Ghia Type 14. However, faced with economic constraints, the board of directors at Volkswagen declined to finance the development of the project. Undeterred, Karmann decided to take on the challenge independently, assuming the entire financial burden for the construction of the vehicle. The renowned Italian designer Giugiaro applied his creative genius to craft the Scirocco’s distinctive bodywork. Notably, the design bore some similarities to the Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint, another creation by Giugiaro just prior to the Scirocco project. The collaboration between Giugiaro and Karmann resulted in a visually striking sports coupe that would leave a lasting mark on the automotive industry. Karmann, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the project, took charge of the production of the Volkswagen Scirocco I and II models at its Osnabrück plant. Despite initial reluctance from the VW group board of directors, the vehicle was eventually christened the “Scirocco.” The name pays homage to a warm wind that originates in the Sahara and blows southward towards the Mediterranean, reflecting the car’s dynamic and spirited nature. In the end, the Volkswagen Scirocco stands as a testament to the perseverance of its creators, overcoming financial challenges and corporate hesitations to become a beloved icon in the world of sports coupes.
