Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Vehicle Overview

The Volkswagen Golf, introduced in 1974 and designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, faced a daunting task from the outset: to inherit the legacy of the iconic Beetle. The Beetle, born before the war, had evolved over time to achieve global success and maturity. The new offering from Wolfsburg, however, proved to be revolutionary in comparison, featuring a front-mounted water-cooled transverse engine, front-wheel drive, and two or four doors with a hatchback, offering excellent interior space and fuel efficiency. The Golf, known as the “Rabbit” in North America and “Caribe” in Latin America, quickly garnered overwhelming success, spawning numerous iterations, including the sporty GTI in 1976 and the convertible version in 1979. Initially introduced in Italy in June 1974 but hitting the market only after summer, the Golf debuted with two engine options: a 1,100cc producing 60 horsepower and a top speed of 140 km/h, and a 1,500cc generating 70 horsepower and capable of reaching 160 km/h. Three trim levels were available: standard, L, and LS (the latter exclusively for the 1,500cc model), paired with a four-speed gearbox. Despite its compact exterior dimensions—measuring 3.75 meters in length and 1.61 meters in width—the Golf offered ample space for passengers and cargo, setting a new standard for versatility in its segment. The first-generation Golf remained in production until 1983, with a total of 6.8 million units produced during its run. In 1993, production of the first-generation Golf shifted to Volkswagen’s South African plants, where it continued to be manufactured until 2010 under the name Volkswagen City Golf. This enduring legacy speaks volumes about the Golf’s enduring appeal and its status as a true automotive icon that transcends generations and continents.
