Vehicle Overview
The VinFast VF 8, previously known as the eVF35, is a compact electric SUV designed by Pininfarina under the direction of Kevin Rice. Unveiled at the 2021 Los Angeles Motor Show, the VF 8 represents VinFast’s entry into the global electric vehicle (EV) market. Positioned as a mid-size crossover (D-segment), the VF 8 has been manufactured and marketed by VinFast, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s Vingroup, since 2022. The VF 8 debuted in January 2022 as part of VinFast’s ambitious EV lineup, signaling the company’s plans to expand into global markets. In Vietnam, orders opened in early 2022, and the first 100 customers received their VF 8 vehicles on September 10, 2022. VinFast began its U.S. expansion on July 14, 2022, with the opening of six dealerships in California, showcasing the VF 8 alongside the larger VF 9. Deliveries in the U.S. were scheduled for fall 2022. Additionally, an assembly plant in Chatham County, North Carolina, broke ground in mid-2023, with production of the VF 7, VF 8, and VF 9 planned to commence by 2025. The VF 8 blends elegant, rounded proportions with chrome accents and modern lighting elements. Its front fascia features narrow LED daytime running lights connected by a chrome strip, beneath which sit the main headlamps. Designed by Pininfarina, the VF 8’s exterior reflects VinFast’s commitment to Italian styling. The interior features a two-tone dashboard, a central multimedia touch display that replaces a traditional instrument panel, and a head-up display projected onto the windshield. The VF 8 is powered by dual electric motors, providing all-wheel drive. In the U.S., the “Eco” model delivers 348 hp (260 kW) and 368 lb⋅ft (499 Nm) of torque, while the “Plus” model boasts 402 hp (300 kW) and 457 lb⋅ft (620 Nm). Both models offer standard or extended-range battery options, with ranges from 248 to 292 miles (WLTP). Early VF 8 batteries were supplied by Samsung SDI, with VinFast aiming to establish its own battery factory. Unique to VinFast, battery leasing reduces upfront costs and includes replacement if capacity falls below 70%.
