Triumph TR5 Ginevra
The Triumph TR5 Ginevra designed by Michelotti.
Vehicle Overview
The Triumph TR5 Ginevra, designed by Giovanni Michelotti, is a unique piece of automotive history with a fascinating backstory. In early 1968, as the Geneva Motor Show approached, Michelotti was initially set to showcase the new Triumph Stag at his stand. However, a last-minute decision by Standard Triumph’s management moved the Stag to the official Triumph stand, leaving Michelotti with an empty space and a tight deadline. Faced with this sudden change, Michelotti swiftly pivoted to create a new prototype. In a remarkable effort, Michelotti and his team, including employees, friends, and family, worked tirelessly for 15 days and nights to develop what would become the Triumph TR5 Ginevra, named after the show where it was unveiled. This prototype was presented as an evolution of the TR5, previewing what was to become the TR6. Michelotti used a TR5 chassis and a 2-litre straight-six engine, which was not the larger 2.5-litre version used in the production model. The engine was equipped with Lucas fuel injection, and the car featured a standard 4-speed gearbox with overdrive. The TR5 Ginevra was built as prototype X760, showcasing Michelotti’s design vision and ingenuity. After its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the TR5 Ginevra’s role as a prototype concluded when Standard Triumph assigned the task of designing the future TR6 to the Karmann bodywork company. Despite this, the TR5 Ginevra remains a one-off, cherished for its rarity and historical significance. Giovanni Michelotti personally used the Triumph TR5 Ginevra as his daily car for several years following its construction, further adding to its storied legacy. Today, the TR5 Ginevra continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors, symbolizing a pivotal moment in automotive design history.
