Stutz IV Porte
The Stutz IV Porte four door sedan.
Vehicle Overview
The Stutz IV Porte marked the debut of Stutz in the sedan segment, introduced towards the end of 1978 alongside the Blackhawk Series 3. Designed by Paolo Martin, formerly of Pininfarina (renowned for the Ferrari Modulo concept car), the IV Porte bore a name reminiscent of the Maserati Quattroporte, signaling its luxurious sedan aspirations. Unlike the Stutz Duplex, which was essentially an extended Blackhawk, the IV Porte was a distinct model. It utilized the platform of the 1977 four-door Pontiac Bonneville, leveraging General Motors’ B platform. The wheelbase, passenger compartment, and drivetrain were carried over unchanged, including the door shapes and glass sections. However, the iconic design elements that defined Stutz were seamlessly integrated into this new template. Manufactured in Italy by Carrozzeria Saturn, the IV Porte featured a rear end slightly higher than the Blackhawk Series 3, providing a unique stance and presence on the road. This design adaptation resonated well with customers, and approximately 50 units were swiftly produced. Among the early buyers was renowned singer Kenny Rogers, adding a touch of celebrity allure to the IV Porte’s clientele. The Stutz IV Porte exemplified Stutz’s commitment to blending American engineering with Italian craftsmanship and design finesse. Its introduction expanded Stutz’s portfolio beyond sports cars, catering to discerning buyers seeking luxury, exclusivity, and the distinctive flair that Stutz automobiles were renowned for.
