Stutz Bearcat
The Stutz Bearcat designed by Virgil Exner and built in Italy.
Vehicle Overview
The Stutz Bearcat was introduced as a direct response to customer demand for an open-top Stutz model. After the positive reception of the Stutz Convertible D’Italia, which highlighted a growing preference for convertibles, O’Donnell saw an opportunity to expand the brand’s lineup by introducing the Stutz Bearcat Convertible. This new model was based on the Stutz Blackhawk Coupe, but with modifications to create a luxurious, open-air driving experience. Unlike the full convertible design of the D’Italia, the Stutz Bearcat adopted a “safety convertible” structure, making it unique in its category. Instead of the traditional B-pillar, the Bearcat featured a robust roll bar, enhancing both safety and stability during a crash. Positioned between the windshield and the roll bar was a Targa-style plastic hardtop that could be manually removed to allow for a more dynamic, open-air experience. Behind the roll bar, the Stutz Bearcat featured a fabric convertible hood, which could be folded down to further embrace the thrill of driving with the wind in your hair. Designed by the famous Virgil Exner, known for his visionary work with Chrysler, the Stutz Bearcat was built in Italy by Carrozzeria Saturn, a small coachbuilder. This combination of American luxury with Italian craftsmanship gave the Bearcat a unique and refined character, making it a standout choice for discerning customers who desired both elegance and performance. The Stutz Bearcat catered to those seeking a convertible that offered more than just the joy of open-air driving; it provided a model that balanced safety with style. Its distinctive design and luxurious features helped expand Stutz’s offerings, allowing the brand to reach a broader audience of automotive enthusiasts. By introducing the Bearcat, O’Donnell solidified Stutz’s reputation for blending innovation with timeless luxury, ensuring that the brand continued to evolve while meeting the needs of its customers. In summary, the Stutz Bearcat was not only a symbol of high-end luxury but also a testament to Stutz’s commitment to combining safety, performance, and style in one extraordinary convertible. Whether appreciated for its innovative design, exceptional craftsmanship, or unique safety features, the Bearcat remains an iconic part of Stutz’s legacy in the luxury automobile market.
