The Skoda Favorit designed by Bertone.
The Skoda Favorit marked a significant turning point for the Eastern European automotive industry in the early 1980s. Amidst a push for technological modernization within the sector, Škoda unveiled the Favorit at the Brno International Fair in September 1987. This debut signaled a departure from Škoda’s past, which had been constrained by governmental programming, and ushered in a new era of automotive design and innovation. Equipped with front-wheel drive, a transverse front engine, MacPherson strut front suspension, and interconnected rear wheels, the Favorit boasted technical specifications akin to many Western models. Its body designed by Bertone, embodied a departure from the boxy aesthetics of previous Škoda models. Despite bearing a resemblance to Russian counterparts such as the Lada Samara and ZAZ Tavria, the Favorit represented a leap forward in both style and performance. Internally, the Favorit featured a modernized design compared to its predecessors, although it fell short of the quality and refinement found in Western European vehicles. The cabin, while showcasing more contemporary styling, retained a somewhat Spartan feel, with the use of economical materials and less attention to detail in assembly. Under the hood, the Favorit was powered by a 1289 cc all-aluminum overhead-valve engine, delivering 63 horsepower to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. While its performance was modest in relation to its engine size, the Favorit offered respectable fuel efficiency and reliability. Despite facing challenges in gaining traction in Western European markets, the Favorit represented a pivotal moment for Škoda, setting the stage for future collaborations and joint ventures with prominent Western manufacturers. Its legacy endured through subsequent models, including the Forman station wagon derivative and the Felicia, which further refined Škoda’s design language and positioned the brand for greater success in the global automotive market.
