The story of Bertone: the most controversial coachbuilder ever

This Simca 1000 Coupé Bertone project was born as a proposal for a Coupé based on the Fiat 850, but was rejected by the Turin manufacturer, while it was welcomed by the French company Simca.
The Simca 1000 coupé was unveiled by Bertone at the Geneva Motor Show in 1962. The slender line that Giorgietto Giugiaro gave it, suggests high performance, in reality with only 52CV that the engine offers, the performance was not exciting, but the clean line arouses elegance and the interior finishes are worthy of a custom-built grand tourer. When it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1962, the audience applauded the design metamorphosis. The car, despite having a slender line, is heavier and the behavior reveals disappointing performance, especially during cornering and with crosswinds. With the next model, the 1200S Coupé, Simca ran for cover, reworked the engine making it more performing. The “rework” was also the prerogative of the Mille. The 4-cylinder engine is longitudinal rear, as if it were the NSU Prinz Sport model, but in a modern key, signed by Bertone. The transmission had 4 synchronized gears and central control lever. The front and rear suspensions were independent with telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers. It also featured hydraulic disc brakes on all four wheels. The dimensions are 3925mm in length, the carriageways are differentiated: 1250mm in front and 1255mm in the rear as is the height, the empty weight is 795Kg. The performance of the Simca 1000 Coupé was adequate for the displacement and for the time, in fact it reached 140Km / h.
