Seat Cordoba Cabrio

The Seat Cordoba Cabrio concept by Italdesign.

Vehicle Overview

The Seat Cordoba Cabrio concept, designed by Italdesign, was an ambitious project aimed at expanding the brand’s offerings in the open-top car market. Introduced in the early 1990s, the Cordoba Cabrio was conceived as a stylish and practical alternative to the more expensive convertibles of the time. The car was based on the SEAT Cordoba, a model that was already proving successful in the market due to its dynamic performance and affordable price point. The concept was a four-seat convertible, offering more practicality than typical two-seat open-top cars, with the hope of appealing to families and individuals seeking a versatile yet sporty vehicle. The Cordoba Cabrio, like the sedan it was based on, used the Ibiza platform, providing a solid foundation for the open-top design. Its four seats made it stand out, as it was designed to offer more than just a weekend toy, providing the functionality of a family car in a convertible format. The design was sleek and modern, staying true to SEAT’s image while incorporating Italdesign’s signature Italian flair for style and innovation. Despite the promise the Cordoba Cabrio held, Volkswagen, which owned SEAT at the time, decided not to approve the project. The primary concern was the high manufacturing costs associated with producing the convertible, which would have severely limited the profit margins on each vehicle sold. Additionally, Volkswagen was focused on ensuring that SEAT’s efforts were concentrated on more commercially viable models, especially as the brand was still feeling the effects of the 1993 economic crisis. As a result, the Cordoba Cabrio never made it to production. However, the concept remained a fascinating part of SEAT’s history. The only unit ever made of the Seat Cordoba Cabrio is now preserved in SEAT’s historical car collection, stored in warehouse A-122, serving as a reminder of the brand’s aspirations and the innovative spirit behind this unique, but ultimately unrealized, project.
