The Renault Floride Cabriolet by Ghia.
The Renault Floride Cabriolet was a charming and practical car that became synonymous with the elegant lifestyle of the French Riviera in the 1960s. With its attractive and sleek Italian-designed body, it was a car that combined fun driving with a touch of glamour, perfectly suited for the scenic coastal roads. The Renault Floride was based on the mechanics of the Renault Dauphine, but its body design was something truly special. Initially inspired by a stylistic proposal from renowned designer Virgil Exner for Ghia, the design was further refined by Pietro Frua. It made its debut at the 1958 Paris Motor Show, drawing attention for its European elegance and appeal. In the United States, the car was marketed under the name “Caravelle,” where it found a dedicated following. The Floride/Caravelle was promoted by iconic French actress Brigitte Bardot, adding to its allure and luxury image. Notably, American actress Grace Kelly also owned one, and the car was later part of Prince Ranieri’s collection in Monaco for many years, further cementing its status as a symbol of refined taste. The Floride was produced in various versions: initially a two-seater coupé, followed by a two-seater convertible. Later, a 2+2 version was offered, as well as a version with a hardtop. Despite being designed for practicality and ease of use, it was always intended to embody style and enjoyment behind the wheel. Its combination of French practicality and Italian flair made the Renault Floride Cabriolet a beloved classic from the era.
