Vehicle Overview
The Eagle Premier project began in 1982 when Renault, which had acquired American Motors, decided to introduce a new vehicle for the U.S. market. The goal was to create a three-box saloon with a classic design but with a distinctly European flair, an approach that would set it apart in the American automotive landscape. Designed by the renowned Italdesign, the Eagle Premier aimed to blend innovative features with traditional styling, offering a fresh take on the American sedan. The initial concept featured cutting-edge design elements that were ahead of their time. These included a distinctive grille, sleek front headlights, a raked windscreen, and rear windows with high boot lines, complemented by wraparound windows and concealed pillars for a more modern and streamlined look. These bold innovations, however, were later dropped from the final production model after market feedback showed that they were too forward-thinking for U.S. tastes at the time. The car’s development saw several key transitions in branding. Originally conceived under American Motors, the project later switched to the Renault nameplate following market research. After Chrysler’s acquisition of American Motors, the car was marketed as the Eagle Premier, signaling a new direction for the brand. The Eagle Premier stood out not only for its European-inspired design but also for its combination of advanced technology and comfort. Although the original vision of the Eagle Premier was altered to align with market expectations, it remains a symbol of innovation and the ongoing shift in the U.S. automotive landscape during the 1980s.
