Renault 19

This Renault 19 hatchback saloon designed by Giugiaro.

Vehicle Overview

The Renault 19 may not have been groundbreaking in terms of design originality, but it marked a clear step forward in modernity compared to the models it replaced. Developed in collaboration with Giorgetto Giugiaro‘s renowned Italdesign studio, the Renault 19 featured a two-and-a-half-box hatchback design. While reminiscent of the earlier Renault 11 in overall layout, it distinguished itself with a more aerodynamic profile, particularly evident in its sleek front end. One of its most notable features was the near-absence of a traditional grille, replaced instead by a continuation of the sloping engine hood. This seamless design, complemented by simple rectangular headlights, contributed to the car’s clean and understated appearance. Aerodynamic efficiency was a key focus in the Renault 19’s design. The streamlined front end achieved an impressive drag coefficient (Cx) of just 0.30, highlighting the engineers’ success in reducing air resistance. The wraparound front bumper, which integrated an air intake, added a subtle sporty edge to the otherwise minimalist front view. The side profile of the Renault 19 maintained this simplicity, with clean, linear lines and a relatively low beltline. This design choice gave the car a balanced and agile appearance, enhancing its visual appeal without resorting to over-complication. Moving to the rear, the design became more vertical, with a tail that was notably developed in height. The large tailgate, featuring a small integrated spoiler, added practicality while contributing to the car’s aerodynamic form. Square-shaped taillight clusters and a wraparound rear bumper completed the cohesive and modern look. Overall, the Renault 19 successfully blended simplicity with contemporary styling, offering a design that felt fresh without being overly bold. Its emphasis on aerodynamics, particularly at the front and rear, not only improved performance but also gave the car a distinctive character. By focusing on clean lines and practical elements, the Renault 19 struck a balance between form and function, positioning itself as a forward-looking alternative in the compact car segment.
