Porsche Tapiro

The Porsche Tapiro: In 1970 the dream car for Turin Motor Show is intentionally extreme in shapes and technical solutions, but anyway thought for mass-production.

Vehicle Overview

The Porsche Tapiro, unveiled by Italdesign at the 1970 Turin Auto Show and later showcased at the 5th Annual Los Angeles Imported Automobile and Sports Car Show in 1971, epitomized the bold design trends of the era. Designed by the renowned Giorgetto Giugiaro, its sleek wedge-shaped silhouette represented a departure from traditional automotive aesthetics. While initially inspired by the Volkswagen Porsche 914/16, the production version bore no resemblance to its predecessor. Instead, it drew more from the edgy contours of the De Tomaso Mangusta than the earlier Alfa Romeo Iguana. Sharp lines, distinct angles, and pronounced corners defined its exterior, marking the debut of the wedge shape that would become iconic in subsequent years. Featuring avant-garde elements, such as gull-wing doors for both passengers and engine access, the Tapiro pushed the boundaries of automotive design. Its unique structure incorporated a sturdy “cross” steel central frame, serving as both door and hood hinges longitudinally, while doubling as a transversal roll bar. Underneath its striking exterior lay a robust chassis and mechanics based on the Porsche 914/6, delivering exceptional performance. The mid-rear engine layout, rear-wheel drive, and a 5-speed manual transmission ensured an exhilarating driving experience. Powering the Tapiro was a potent 2.4-liter flat-six engine, longitudinally mounted and air-cooled, generating 220 hp at 7800 rpm. With an official top speed of approximately 152 mph (245 km/h), it was a formidable presence on the road. However, its journey was not without tumult. In 1972, the car changed hands to a Spanish industrialist who used it as his daily driver. Tragically, in 1973, it fell victim to a devastating fire, suspected to be arson by activists protesting the owner’s labor policies. Despite the destruction, the resilient chassis survived, eventually finding a new home in the Giugiaro Museum as a testament to its enduring legacy.
