The Porsche 356 Carrera Zagato Coupé Sanction Lost.

Vehicle Overview

The Porsche 356 Carrera Zagato Coupé “Sanction Lost” is a car of mystery and heritage, an enigmatic discovery that intertwines automotive history with a legacy of racing triumph and tragedy. The journey to bring this car back to life began during an exhaustive search through Zagato’s archives for photos of the iconic Porsche 356 Speedster. Hidden among old files, a striking drawing surfaced—an elegant coupé design based on the Porsche 356 Carrera, dated 1959. This unexpected find indicated that Zagato had once envisioned a sleek, aerodynamic coupé version of the Speedster, an advanced stage of the production process that ultimately never reached the public. Alongside the drawing, final sketches were discovered, further fueling the mystery. Though no definitive records of this model existed, it seemed clear that it had been produced and then inexplicably vanished. In the wake of the Speedster’s success, the Porsche Carrera Zagato Coupé “Sanction Lost” was born. With its lines reminiscent of the original Speedster, this model was produced in a limited run of just nine units, each embodying the elegance and performance of its predecessor. This wasn’t the first time that Porsche and Zagato had worked together. Back in 1957, Porsche racing driver Claude Storez approached Zagato to create a bespoke aerodynamic body for his 1957 Porsche 356 Carrera Speedster. Completed in 1958, the Speedster featured a single-piece curved windshield and distinctive red tailfins on its rear wings, all wrapped in a classic white finish. Once finished, the car was shipped back to Porsche’s Stuttgart factory, where the mechanics were fine-tuned before being handed over to Storez. The Porsche-Zagato Speedster made its mark in the 1958 Tour de France Automobile, where Storez finished an impressive second place in the GT race at Reims, just behind Ferrari’s Olivier Gendebien. A rare side-shot photograph from this event remains one of the few images of Storez’s car. In 1959, Storez entered the Speedster into a French rally, where, tragically, he lost his life in an accident during the final stage. His Porsche-Zagato, along with the memories of that fateful day, disappeared from the public eye. Years later, American collector Herb Wetanson, fascinated by the beauty and history of the Porsche-Zagato collaboration, approached Zagato with a request to recreate Storez’s iconic Speedster. This recreation, dubbed “Sanction Lost,” marked the 60th anniversary of Porsche’s founding. Instead of merely replicating the original Speedster, Zagato unearthed the coupé design, and it was decided that nine Speedsters and nine Coupés would be built. The term “Sanction Lost” was chosen to honor the original car’s mysterious disappearance rather than following the “Sanction II” label often used for continuation cars. Utilizing cutting-edge photometric technology, Zagato meticulously studied surviving photographs of Storez’s car to digitally recreate the body with impeccable accuracy. Like the original, the Speedster and one of the Coupés were finished in Bianco Gardenia with red accents on the iconic Zagato tailfins, echoing the color scheme of the original 356 Carrera Speedster. These “Sanction Lost” models not only pay tribute to Storez’s racing legacy but also embody the spirit of a collaboration that defined an era of automotive design. Only 18 units were produced in total, making them exceedingly rare. Yet, beyond their rarity, they serve as a poignant reminder of a car that vanished too soon, leaving behind a legend waiting to be reborn. To complete the trilogy, in 2025 Zagato unveiled the GTL.
