Pegaso Z-103 Berlinetta Panoramica

The Pegaso Z-103 Berlinetta Panoramica by Touring Superleggera.

Vehicle Overview

The Pegaso Z-103 represents a fascinating footnote in the annals of automotive history, embodying the ambitious but brief foray of the Spanish manufacturer Pegaso into the world of high-performance sports cars. Coming after its predecessor, the Z-102, the Z-103 was the final attempt by Pegaso to establish a foothold in the sports car market before shifting its focus back to the production of commercial trucks, where the company’s core competencies lay. Despite its innovative design and engineering, the Z-103 saw limited success, with only three units known to have been built, making it an exceedingly rare gem in the automotive world. One of these rare Z-103 models boasted a distinctive feature from the famed Italian design house, Touring. It was equipped with Touring’s innovative Panoramica windshield, notable for its Yankee-style reverse-raked A-pillars—a design that was quite avant-garde for its time. This particular vehicle was built on the revised Z-103 chassis, underscoring Pegaso’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and engineering, even as its venture into sports cars neared its end. This specific Z-103 played a unique role in Pegaso’s history, serving as an auto show model that graced the stands at the Turin and Paris auto shows in 1956, intriguingly presented without an engine. Later that year, it was equipped with an engine and temporarily loaned to renowned race car driver Romero Requejo, to use while his regular racing Pegaso underwent repairs. After its brief stint on the racing scene, the car was returned to Pegaso, where it underwent a comprehensive refurbishment before being sold in 1958 to its first official owner, Florentino de Lecanda Arrarte. Registered in Bilbao, the car’s deep connection to its first owner is immortalized by a plate in the engine compartment, bearing Arrarte’s name and the car’s license plate number—the same one it proudly displays to this day. The Pegaso Z-103’s story, from its inception to its life with Arrarte, encapsulates a brief but glowing testament to Pegaso’s fleeting, yet unforgettable, dalliance with sports car manufacturing.
