OSI Silver Fox
The OSI Silver Fox experimental prototype.
Vehicle Overview
The OSI Silver Fox, revealed at the 1967 Turin Motor Show, was a radical and futuristic concept designed for competition, specifically targeting Group B6 racing and record-setting attempts. Built by OSI (Officine Stampaggi Industriali), an Italian coachbuilder known for their innovative designs, the Silver Fox was a striking example of aerodynamics-focused engineering, designed to push the boundaries of speed and performance. Powering the Silver Fox is a 1000cc Renault Alpine four-cylinder engine. This compact yet potent unit was mounted obliquely behind the driver’s seat, housed within the left-hand boom of the car’s twin-boom layout. The unusual placement of the engine allowed for a highly aerodynamic design, which was critical to its performance goals. Though the engine was relatively small in displacement, the lightweight construction and advanced aerodynamics compensated for this, aiming to maximize speed and efficiency. The car’s most notable feature is its complex aerodynamic setup, with three prominent wing-shaped aerodynamic aids placed between the two booms. These wings were designed to optimize downforce and stability at high speeds. The front wing is adjustable, but only when the vehicle is static, allowing for fine-tuning depending on the driving conditions. The large central wing was more advanced, featuring an adjustable mechanism that could be altered while driving, giving the driver dynamic control over the car’s aerodynamics to adapt to speed and handling demands. At the rear, a fixed wing completes the aerodynamic profile, and it is integrated with aerodynamic brakes, adding both stability and stopping power during high-speed runs. The OSI Silver Fox’s combination of a small but efficient engine, lightweight design, and cutting-edge aerodynamic innovations made it a standout at the show. Though it was never mass-produced, the car remains an intriguing concept and a testament to OSI’s ambition to break boundaries in automotive design and competition.
