The OSCA V12 Zagato was one of three chassises with 4,5 litre V12 engines that OSCA made (s/n 4500, 4501 and 4502). Zagato designed the body. Some source say it was owned first by Luigi Potti of Milano (who had the chassis delivered in 1952 and then commissioned Zagato to build the body).
The OSCA V12 Zagato is a remarkable vehicle steeped in racing history and intrigue. Initially constructed as a formidable racing car, it was rebodied into a spider configuration, enhancing its aerodynamics and visual appeal. In 1953, the car was raced by renowned driver Clemente Biondetti during the GP Supercortemaggiore, although it unfortunately did not finish the race. The car, identified by its chassis number #4502, has a rich competitive lineage. Notably, it was entered by the legendary Louis Chiron for the GP Monza on September 16, 1951, although it did not make an appearance. Similarly, it was entered by Luigi Potti for the GP Premio del Valentino in Torino on April 6, 1952, but again did not compete. Following its early racing exploits, the OSCA V12 Zagato found its way into the hands of Paolo Cordero di Montezemolo, a piemontese winemaker and uncle to Ferrari CEO Luca Montezemolo. This connection adds a fascinating layer to the car’s story, linking it to a prominent figure in the automotive world. Under Cordero’s ownership, the car transitioned to its spider form, further solidifying its identity as a unique and cherished piece of automotive history. Montezemolo was listed as a participant for the Aosta – San Bernardo race on July 25, 1954, showcasing the car’s ongoing association with notable racing events. Eventually, the OSCA V12 Zagato was housed in the Henri Malartre Museum in Lyon, where it remains a celebrated exhibit, highlighting its significance in both motorsport and automotive heritage. Today, the OSCA V12 Zagato is recognized not just for its racing pedigree but also for its elegant design and the storied lineage that continues to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike.
