A new type of versatile sedan, the Opel Signum aims to achive a combination of good looks, comfort, convenience and versatility.
The Opel Signum 2 concept car, unveiled at the 2001 IAA in Frankfurt, echoed many features of the prototype three years earlier, starting with its dynamic styling and innovative interior. The aesthetics in particular immediately revealed the relationship between the two concept cars. The long wheelbase (mm 2,830) and short rear overhang made Opel Signum 2 attractive even when stationary. This impression was accentuated by the wide wheel arches and 19-inch wide-base tires. The projecting third roof pillar and wide flanks were two typical Opel design features. Opel’s designers and engineers had rejected a second roof pillar above the beltline. “In profile, the Signum 2 looks like a coupe,” emphasized Hans Seer, then director of Design at the German automaker. “Especially when the four frameless side windows are fully lowered.” The fully glazed panoramic roof that extended the windshield backwards gave a feeling of spaciousness and brightness to the passenger compartment, inside which four people could be seated with “business class” comfort. The large tailgate was also glazed. The Opel Signum 2 was built in Italy by Bertone and was then produced from 2002 as simply “Signum“
