Opel Diplomat B Cabriolet

The Opel Diplomat Cabriolet by Fissore.

Vehicle Overview

The Opel Diplomat Cabriolet, crafted by Carrozzeria Fissore in Savigliano, Piedmont, stands as a unique example of automotive luxury and craftsmanship. In 1970 Opel had the plan to attack Mercedes in the large cabriolet segment. They contacted the Osnabrück based specialist Karmann for the transformation of 4 Diplomats sedans into cabriolet, which accepted the order, but had to hand it over to the Italian coachbuilder Fissore due to capacity problems. In 1971, Fissore undertook the meticulous task of transforming the solid-roof Opel Diplomat B into a bespoke convertible. This conversion process involved removing the metal roof, welding numerous reinforcements to maintain structural integrity, and leaving the side windows and frame intact, preserving the sedan’s recognizable silhouette. The soft top itself was manufactured by Karmann, renowned for their expertise in fabricating high-quality convertible roofs, while the electro-hydraulic mechanics were supplied by General Motors, ensuring seamless operation of the roof system. The transformation of the Opel Diplomat B into a convertible limousine was completed between May and October of 1971, with a price tag of 70,000 DM for each conversion. In contrast, a brand new Opel Diplomat B sedan was available for just 19,000 DM, highlighting the exclusivity of the cabriolet variant. The Diplomat Cabriolet was offered in a limited selection of colors, including white, gold, and blue, with one rare example finished in silver. Beneath the elegant exterior, the car retained the original 2.8-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, which delivered a respectable 165 horsepower. This engine, fed by a modern D-Jetronic fuel injection system, offered discreetly sporty performance while ensuring dignified acceleration for a vehicle of its size. The 1.8-ton convertible sedan could theoretically reach speeds of up to 180 km/h, thanks in part to its smooth three-speed automatic transmission. Technically advanced for its time, the Diplomat Cabriolet was equipped with internally ventilated disc brakes on all four wheels, ensuring strong stopping power and added safety. The car’s DeDion rear axle further demonstrated Opel’s commitment to engineering sophistication, offering enhanced handling and stability. Today, the Opel Diplomat Cabriolet remains a rare and highly coveted classic, symbolizing a blend of luxury, performance, and exclusivity.
