The story of Ghia – part 1

The Oldsmobile Thor was a 1967 Ghia design studio commissioned by Bill Mitchell at General Motors. Based on the front-wheel drive Oldsmobile Toronado platform it was designed by Giugiaro while working in Ghia.
The Oldsmobile Thor presented by Ghia displayed at the 1967 Turin Motor Show was built on a chassis that was the largest and most powerful front-wheel-drive model of the time. To have been able to make such a car sleek and streamlined truly does credit to the well-known Ghia designer of the time Giorgetto Giugiaro. Much contributes to this achievement is the very elongated elliptical design formed by the side lights and the happy connection between the slender pavilion and the powerful truncated tail. Also very successful is the frontal view of the Oldsmobile Thor with the sobriety of the low grille, above which wide eyelids conceal the double headlamps by day: the result is a streamlined hood containing the big V8 engine. The interior of Oldsmobile Thor is a classic American-style 2+2, very spacious: in the very comfortable driver’s seat, the instrumentation is gathered on two planks placed overhanging in front of the steering wheel. No changes were brought to the chassis except a shortening of the wheelbase.
