OSCA 1600 GT Spider Maina
The OSCA 1600 GT Spider Maina by Fissore.
Vehicle Overview
The OSCA 1600 GT Spider Maina by Fissore is a rare and beautifully crafted sports car, embodying the Maserati brothers’ dedication to performance and racing heritage. After selling their original company, Maserati, to the Orsi Group in 1937, the three Maserati brothers—Ernesto, Ettore, and Bindo—founded Officine Specializzate per la Costruzione Automobili Fratelli Maserati, or OSCA, in 1947. Their goal was to produce limited-edition competition cars, staying true to their racing roots. Unlike their earlier work at Maserati, which had begun producing road cars, the brothers were focused on creating cars purely for racing. OSCA remained a small operation, never building more than 30 cars in a single year, with all models intended for competitive motorsport. Their first car, the MT4, launched in 1948, was powered by a 1,092cc overhead-cam engine, achieving immediate success in the hands of famed driver Luigi Villoresi. By 1950, OSCA had developed a twin-cam engine in various displacements, with the most powerful versions reaching 1.6 liters. This engine was used not only in OSCA’s race cars but also in FIAT’s sports cars, further cementing OSCA’s reputation for high-performance engineering. Despite their initial reluctance to produce road cars, OSCA eventually began offering their own Grand Touring (GT) cars, including the 1600 GT, which was built around a tubular steel spaceframe chassis. Powered by the OSCA-developed twin-cam engine, the 1600 GT was produced in limited numbers, with only 128 examples being built. Several renowned coachbuilders, including Fissore, Boneschi, Morelli, and Zagato, designed bodies for the car. The OSCA 1600 GT Spider Maina by Fissore is one of the rarest versions, with Fissore producing only 24 bodies on this chassis—21 coupés and just three cabriolets. The “Maina” designation reflects the influence of the small independent coachbuilder responsible for the design. The Spider Maina is celebrated for its elegant open-top styling, blending the racing pedigree of OSCA with the Italian craftsmanship and design expertise of Fissore, making it a highly desirable classic sports car today.
