NSU Sport Spider

The NSU Sport Spider designed by Bertone.

Vehicle Overview

The NSU Sport Spider is a significant milestone in automotive history, produced by NSU Motorenwerke AG from 1964 to 1967. The first prototype of this innovative car was created by the renowned Italian design house,Bertone, in 1960. What makes the NSU Sport Spider particularly groundbreaking is that it was the first Western production car in the world to be powered by a Wankel rotary engine, a revolutionary technology at the time. The Wankel rotary engine, which was water-cooled and featured a single rotor, set the NSU Sport Spider apart from other cars in its class. Unlike conventional piston engines, the Wankel engine was compact, lightweight, and offered smooth power delivery. This cutting-edge technology was an exciting development, as it marked a departure from the traditional internal combustion engine, offering a glimpse into the future of automotive engineering. In addition to its unique powertrain, the NSU Sport Spider featured several advanced design elements. One of the most notable was its front disc brakes, which were a relatively new feature in production cars at the time, offering superior stopping power compared to traditional drum brakes. These advancements in both performance and technology made the Sport Spider a standout vehicle of its era. The body design, created by Bertone, was a perfect match for the car’s forward-thinking engineering. The sleek, sporty exterior of the NSU Sport Spider, with its flowing lines and compact proportions, perfectly embodied the spirit of the 1960s. The car’s modern, European styling made it both visually appealing and aerodynamically efficient. Though only a limited number of NSU Sport Spiders were produced, the car remains an iconic piece of automotive history, representing a bold step forward in car design and engineering, and a pioneering example of the use of the Wankel rotary engine in production vehicles.
