The Neckar St.Trop Coupé by OSI.
The Neckar St Trop made its debut at the Turin Motor Show in November 1963, presented by OSI under the name OSI 1200. This event marked a significant milestone for OSI, as it was the first automobile model to be presented with the OSI brand. Before this, all models assembled in the OSI factory carried the logos of other car manufacturers, most notably Innocenti or Fiat. The unveiling of the OSI 1200 symbolized OSI’s transition from being merely an assembler to establishing its own automotive identity. The first model introduced in 1963 was the Spyder version, designed by the renowned Giovanni Michelotti. His design captured the attention of the automotive world with its sleek and elegant lines, characteristic of Italian sports cars of the era. Following this successful presentation, OSI continued to innovate, showcasing the Coupé version and the finalized Spyder at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show. By that time, production of the Spyder had already commenced, reflecting OSI’s confidence in the model’s appeal. Fiat Neckar’s management was immediately captivated by both versions and saw an opportunity to fill a gap in the German market, where no domestic manufacturer offered a similar model. Consequently, Fiat Neckar secured a contract with OSI to market these cars in Germany under the Neckar brand. The Spyder version, in particular, enjoyed some success, appealing to enthusiasts seeking Italian flair combined with practical German distribution. The cars were imported from Italy to Neckar’s factory in Heilbronn, where a small yet distinctive modification was made: a simple chrome thread was added to the grille to secure the Neckar logo. This subtle change marked their identity while preserving the Italian design. Thanks to André Chardonnet, the official Fiat importer in France, the entire Neckar range, including the Spyder and OSI Coupé, was marketed in France. This collaboration enabled the cars to reach a wider European audience, cementing their legacy as unique, stylish, and cross-culturally significant automobiles.
