The Nardi Raggio Azzurro I: The first Blue Ray.

Vehicle Overview

The Nardi Raggio Azzurro I, designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Vignale, stands as a remarkable testament to Space Era-inspired automotive design. Completed in September 1955, this car captures the era’s fascination with futuristic aesthetics and advanced technology. The Raggio Azzurro I’s design is strikingly innovative, featuring a full-grille front reminiscent of 1950s jet aircraft. The grille, combined with three headlights—including a prominent central light—evokes the look of a jet’s nose, emphasizing its space-age influence. The car’s greenhouse, with its blue Perspex™ roof, resembles a double-bubble jet cabin, adding to the futuristic allure. The roof itself is a highlight of the design, equipped with a grilled air scoop and internal directional vents. This feature not only enhances the car’s aerodynamics but also reinforces its aviation-inspired aesthetic. The side and rear windows, also made of blue Perspex™, slide upwards towards the center of the roof, reflecting the innovative design trends of the era. At the rear, the Nardi Raggio Azzurro I showcases two tail fins that resemble the swept-back wings of a swallow, further emphasizing its jet-inspired design. These fins not only contribute to the car’s aerodynamic profile but also enhance its visual impact, making it a true icon of its time. Built on a tubular steel Pan American road racing chassis by Nardi, the Raggio Azzurro I is powered by a 2.5-liter V6 engine from the Lancia Aurelia B20, updated with Nardi components for improved performance. The car features a Nardi floor-mounted gear change and a four-speed Aurelia B20 transaxle, with advanced suspension systems including independent front and de Dion rear layouts. Introduced at the 1955 Turin Auto Show and later showcased in Paris and New York, the Nardi Raggio Azzurro I was celebrated for its cutting-edge design and technical prowess. The second iteration, also designed by Michelotti and completed in 1958, continued the legacy of this groundbreaking vehicle, underscoring the impact of Space Era design on automotive innovation.
