Monteverdi HAI 450 SS
Chassis
The Monteverdi Hai 450 SS was a prototype and follow on to the 375 High Speed build by Fissore. It was intended to be a direct competitor to the top of the list super sports cars of Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati.
Vehicle Overview
The Monteverdi Hai 450 SS prototype made its grand entrance onto the automotive stage at the 1970 Geneva Auto Show, captivating audiences with its bold design and powerful performance. Sporting a robust 6,974-cubic-centimetre V8 engine sourced from Chrysler, positioned strategically behind the front seats, this remarkable machine derived its name from the engine’s output and the German word for shark, “Hai.” While the origins of the body design are subject to some debate, it is widely believed that Trevor Fiore, associated with Carrozzeria Fissore, played a significant role in crafting the sleek and aerodynamic exterior. However, some sources attribute the design to the renowned Pietro Frua, adding an air of mystery to the car’s creation. Following the debut of the initial prototype, Monteverdi sought to refine and enhance the model, resulting in the creation of a second car known as the Hai 450 GTS. This iteration featured a longer wheelbase and subtle detail changes, including revised door handles and striking red bodywork, further elevating its aesthetic appeal. Initially, Monteverdi envisioned producing a limited run of 49 units, aiming to offer automotive enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the exhilarating performance and exquisite craftsmanship of the Hai 450 SS. However, despite the initial enthusiasm surrounding the project, production came to an unexpected halt after only the two prototypes were completed. In the 1990s, the story of the Monteverdi Hai 450 SS took an intriguing turn with the creation of two additional replicas from spare parts. These faithful recreations of the original prototypes now find their home in the prestigious Verkehrshaus Museum in Luzern, serving as timeless reminders of Monteverdi’s bold vision and enduring legacy in the automotive world.
