Michelotti Pura

The Michelotti Pura was an underrated road going race car.

Vehicle Overview

The Michelotti Pura, unveiled at the Turin Auto Show in 1988, was conceived as a sleek two-seat, road-going race car. This futuristic prototype was the brainchild of Edgardo Michelotti, with key styling contributions from Tateo Uchida. The car’s design focused on performance and innovation, reflecting a clear vision of the future of sports cars at the time. One of the standout features of the Pura is its distinctive body, which was crafted entirely from fiberglass. This material helped keep the car’s weight down, a crucial factor for enhancing its performance capabilities. The car featured a full sliding glass canopy instead of conventional doors, adding to its unique and aerodynamic appearance. Underneath, the Pura boasted a cutting-edge chassis design, incorporating a lightweight monocoque structure made from a blend of carbon fiber and aluminum. This construction not only contributed to its rigidity but also represented an early example of materials that would become more mainstream in high-performance vehicles in the following decades. The Pura’s underpinnings were equally impressive, featuring steel subframes that provided additional structural integrity. Positioned mid-rear was an Alfa Romeo-sourced 1800cc turbocharged inline-4 engine, producing 155 horsepower. While that power output might seem modest by today’s standards, combined with the car’s lightweight construction, it would have given the Pura impressive acceleration and handling characteristics. The powertrain was paired with a ZF 5-speed manual transmission, ensuring a direct and engaging driving experience. The Michelotti Pura was far ahead of its time, incorporating advanced aerodynamic features and engineering solutions. Though it remained a one-off prototype, its design elements foreshadowed key innovations seen later in cars like the Lotus Elise and Renault Spider. Moreover, it predates the McLaren F1’s pioneering use of carbon fiber composite in 1992, showcasing how advanced Michelotti’s vision was. The Pura remains an intriguing piece of automotive history, a rare fusion of Italian design and forward-thinking engineering.
