The Maserati Quattroporte Frua built for Aga Khan.

Vehicle Overview

The Maserati Quattroporte Frua is one of the most exclusive and intriguing chapters in Maserati’s history, showcasing Italian automotive craftsmanship at its finest. In 1971, Karim Aga Khan commissioned a bespoke luxury sedan built on the Maserati Indy platform, reflecting his desire for a powerful yet refined grand tourer with unique styling. To bring this vision to life, Rory Brown was appointed as the chief engineer, while the design was entrusted to the legendary Carrozzeria Frua. The car was powered by Maserati’s renowned 4.9-liter V8 engine (Tipo 107/49), delivering 300 PS (221 kW; 296 hp). This powertrain offered exceptional performance for the era, ensuring that the Quattroporte Frua combined Maserati’s hallmark performance with opulent comfort. The car’s sleek and elegant design was a testament to Frua’s mastery, blending the dynamic proportions of the Maserati Indy with the stately character of a luxury sedan. The prototype of the Quattroporte Frua debuted at major international auto shows, first in Paris in 1971 and later in Geneva in 1972. It was a production-ready model, even receiving its own chassis code, AM 121, highlighting Maserati’s intent to bring it to market. However, the situation changed following Maserati’s acquisition by Citroën, whose influence led to the development of the SM-based Quattroporte II. As a result, the Frua Quattroporte project was shelved, with only two units ever completed. The first car, chassis #004, was delivered to Karim Aga Khan in 1974, while the prototype, chassis #002, was sold directly by Frua to the King of Spain. These two vehicles remain rare and highly sought-after examples of Maserati’s bespoke craftsmanship and Frua’s timeless design. The Quattroporte Frua stands as a fascinating “what if” in Maserati’s lineage, embodying an era of unparalleled creativity and custom coachbuilding, forever cementing its legacy as a symbol of exclusivity and artistry in automotive history.
