Maserati A6GCS Spyder Vignale

Chassis

#2049

The Maserati A6GCS Spyder Vignale designed by Giovanni Michelotti.

Vehicle Overview

The Maserati A6GCS Spyder Vignale Chassis #2049 first appeared at the Torino Salon in April 1953, where it was displayed at the Vignale stand. The car, featuring a design by Giovanni Michelotti, stood out due to its distinctive exhaust pipes mounted on the left side. This design choice, though controversial at the time, played an important role in the car’s overall aesthetic, balancing both form and function. Later that summer, on August 16, 1953, the car was entered into the 12 Hours of Pescara. Driven by Mancini and Dal Cin, it secured a respectable second place finish. However, the car faced difficulties at the 1000km of Nürburgring on August 30, where it retired early, marked with a DNF (Did Not Finish) after being driven by McAfee and Herrmann. By 1954, chassis #2049 was again in action at the Mille Miglia, driven by Mancini and Dal Cin. Sadly, after this event, the car was destroyed during a racing incident. In 1955, the chassis was rebuilt, this time by Scaglietti, with a new body replacing the original Vignale design. In December 1955, the car found a new owner in Bruno Franzoni from Milan, Italy. It passed through a few more hands over the years, including ownership by Rudi Grimas in 1958 and later Calmonte in Italy. During the 1980s and 1990s, the car was regularly entered in the Mille Miglia by Calmonte, achieving several finishes over the years, from #166 in 1986 to #297 in 1997.
