The Maserati A6 1500 GT by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Maserati A6 1500 Pininfarina was more than just a car—it was Maserati’s bold leap from the racetrack to the open road. Born in the shadow of war, its development began in 1941 under the meticulous hands of the Maserati brothers. But as the world burned, priorities shifted, and the project was shelved, waiting for the right moment to emerge. That moment arrived in 1947, when the first A6 1500 prototype, cloaked in a Pininfarina body, made its grand debut at the Geneva Salon International de l’Auto. A vision of postwar optimism, the prototype was a sculpted masterpiece. A two-door, two-seat berlinetta with a sharply tapered cabin, its silhouette was futuristic, accentuated by triple square portholes on the front wings and sleek, hidden headlamps—a daring design choice that gave it an almost otherworldly presence. It was Maserati’s declaration that the future had arrived. Maserati wasted no time bringing the A6 1500 into low-volume production, with Pinin Farina responsible for most of the bodies. But production versions saw a more restrained approach—gone were the hidden headlights, replaced with conventional ones, and soon a second side window was introduced for a more practical, yet still undeniably elegant, profile. The design continued to evolve, with later models adopting a 2+2 fastback body style, blending performance with a refined grand touring aesthetic. By 1948, Maserati had begun experimenting further. That year, a Pinin Farina Convertibile turned heads at the Salone dell’Automobile di Torino, though only two were ever built. In 1949, Zagato added its own touch to the A6 1500 with the rare and striking Panoramica coupé, featuring an elongated greenhouse for an almost cinematic effect. Between 1947 and 1950, just 61 A6 1500s rolled off the line. By then, the A6G 2000 was waiting in the wings, ready to take the baton. But the A6 1500 was the spark—the first true Maserati for the road, an exquisite blend of engineering and artistry that set the stage for everything that came next.
