The Maserati 5000 GT Allemano designed by Giovanni Michelotti.
The Maserati 5000 GT Allemano is one of the most exclusive and iconic cars in automotive history, with only 22 examples built. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti and bodied by Carrozzeria Allemano in 1962, it represents the pinnacle of luxury, performance, and exclusivity during its era. Dubbed “the car of Kings,” the 5000 GT was not only Maserati’s flagship but also the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive production car of its time. The story of the Maserati 5000 GT begins with the Shah of Persia, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who had been impressed by the Maserati 3500 GT. In 1958, he commissioned Maserati to create a car with greater power and exclusivity. Maserati’s chief engineer, Giulio Alfieri, answered the call by modifying the 5-liter V8 engine from the Maserati 450S race car to fit the 3500 GT’s chassis, resulting in the Tipo 103. The first 5000 GT, known as the “Shah of Persia,” was bodied by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, which created a sleek aluminum two-seater coupé. The success of the Shah of Persia led Maserati to produce a limited run of 5000 GTs, with subsequent models bodied by various coachbuilders, including Pininfarina, Bertone, Ghia, and Frua. However, from 1960 onwards, Carrozzeria Allemano became the main partner, producing the majority of the 5000 GTs. Giovanni Michelotti’s design for the Allemano-bodied 5000 GT blended elegance and muscularity, creating a timeless look that still captivates collectors today. Underneath its refined exterior, the 5000 GT featured cutting-edge engineering. The 5-liter V8 engine delivered exceptional performance, allowing the car to reach top speeds of over 270 km/h (170 mph). This remarkable power was paired with a luxurious interior crafted to the highest standards, making it a favorite among royalty, celebrities, and industrialists. The Maserati 5000 GT Allemano remains a symbol of exclusivity and bespoke craftsmanship. With only 22 examples ever made, it stands as a testament to Maserati’s ability to combine racing pedigree with unparalleled luxury and design.
