The Maserati 3500 GT by Touring: italian elegance.
The Maserati 3500 GT debuted at the 1958 Geneva Motor Show, designed by Carrozzeria Touring as a blend of elegance and power. Recognizing the emerging luxury grand tourer market in the mid-1950s, Omer Orsi, Maserati’s leader, saw the need for a new model that would combine sportiness with luxury and comfort. Internally known as Tipo 101, the 3500 GT featured a 3.5-liter engine producing 230 HP, utilizing advanced technology like twin overhead camshafts and triple Weber carburetors. Its tubular steel frame provided structural integrity, while the suspension offered a balance of comfort and stability with independent front wheels and a rear rigid axle. The car boasted luxurious features like leather interiors and Jaeger instruments, setting new standards by offering optional air conditioning and electric windows. Front disc brakes and a limited-slip differential were later introduced, enhancing performance and safety. Production commenced in late 1957, with Touring’s design chosen for its practical yet sporty appeal. The model’s success led to variants like the Spider Vignale, a convertible version introduced in 1960, and subsequent models like the Sebring and Mistral. By 1964, Maserati had built approximately 2250 Maserati 3500 GT, including coupés, spiders, and custom-built versions by various coachbuilders. The 3500 GT’s legacy positioned Maserati as a prominent player in the luxury grand tourer segment, marking a pivotal shift from niche sports cars to high-performance touring vehicles.
