The Lombardi FL1, designed by the talented team at Francis Lombardi, was a striking mid-engined concept car that made its debut at the 1972 Turin Auto Salon. Intended to combine performance and innovation, the FL1 showcased the coachbuilder’s ambition to produce a modern sports car with compact dimensions, lightweight construction, and impressive performance. The FL1 measured just 4,214 mm in length, 1,700 mm in width, and 1,135 mm in height, giving it a low and aggressive stance. Despite its sporty appearance, the car’s compact proportions and lightweight construction—tipping the scales at just 800 kg—made it both nimble and efficient. Under the sleek body, the FL1 was designed to offer two engine options: a 2.0-liter fuel-injected Lancia engine or a more powerful 3.0-liter V6 sourced from Ford. In its 2.0-liter guise, the FL1 was claimed to reach a top speed of 125 mph, while the larger V6 promised a more exhilarating 140 mph. This flexibility in engine configurations highlighted the car’s potential to cater to a range of performance preferences, from spirited driving to outright speed. The concept was envisioned as a limited-production model, with plans to manufacture between 150 and 200 units per year. However, despite its promising design and technical potential, the Lombardi FL1 never made it to production.
