Lightyear One

The Lightyear One all-electric solar car designed by GranStudio.

Vehicle Overview

The Lightyear One is an ambitious prototype all-electric solar car developed by the Dutch company Lightyear, with production scheduled to begin in 2021. First announced on June 25, 2019, this cutting-edge vehicle represents a leap forward in sustainable automotive design, integrating solar panels and advanced electric vehicle technology. The Lightyear One features a sleek, large hatchback body, with its bonnet, roof, and boot covered in 5 square meters (54 square feet) of solar panels. These solar panels are not just decorative; they serve a functional purpose, contributing to the vehicle’s impressive range and energy efficiency. The car is designed to offer a WLTP range of 725 km (450 miles) on a full charge, positioning it as one of the longest-range electric vehicles on the market. Additionally, the solar panels can generate enough energy to add 50-65 km (30-40 miles) of range per day in optimal summer conditions, reducing the need for frequent charging. The car’s aerodynamic design is a critical element of its performance, boasting a drag coefficient of Cd=0.20, which is among the lowest in the automotive industry, further enhancing its efficiency. The Lightyear One is an all-wheel drive vehicle powered by four in-wheel electric hub motors, each delivering a smooth, quiet, and highly efficient driving experience. The low-mounted battery system helps keep the vehicle’s center of gravity low, contributing to stability and handling. Designed with five adult passengers and luggage in mind, the Lightyear One combines practicality with sustainability, offering the potential for everyday use without sacrificing performance. The design work was carried out in collaboration with GranStudio, an Italian design firm known for its expertise in high-performance, energy-efficient vehicles. The Lightyear One originated from the Solar Team Eindhoven’s solar-powered cars for the prestigious World Solar Challenge, and has quickly gained attention as one of the most exciting developments in the future of electric mobility.
