Lancia Megagamma
The Lancia Megagamma: An innovative and radical project, that will mark the history of the car: the car becomes a moving compartment, favouring internal comfort. The monovolume was born.
Vehicle Overview
The Lancia Megagamma, conceived in response to the tightening speed limits across various countries, anticipated the commercial competition’s shift towards fuel efficiency and enhanced comfort and services. Designed by Giugiaro and unveiled by Italdesign at the 1978 Turin Motor Show, it represented a practical and immediately producible prototype. Sporting a compact 5-door MPV body type, the Megagamma mechanically mirrored the front-wheel-drive layout of the Lancia Gamma, featuring a front-mounted 2.5-liter single-overhead-cam boxer engine with Bosch L-Jetronic electronic fuel injection. Its raised roof, 25 cm higher than the flagship Lancia, offered enhanced interior space, including a more ergonomic driving position with an advanced pedal layout for a more upright stance, thereby optimizing knee room. Unlike the Lancia Gamma 2500, the Megagamma’s style wasn’t brand-specific; instead, it aimed for a universal appeal. Its ergonomic design harked back to early-century cars where one could “sit on board.” The flat floor, aligned with the door cut, housed the tank and spare wheel, maximizing internal compartment space. Standing 247 mm taller and 290 mm shorter than the Lancia Gamma, it boasted an internal compartment extended by 170 mm. Rich internal trimmings, coupled with innovative technological solutions, ensured unparalleled comfort. Italdesign had previously experimented with a similar monovolume concept with the 1976 Alfa Romeo New York Taxi commissioned by the MoMA of New York. However, like its predecessor, the Megagamma didn’t see commercial fruition, despite inspiring successful models like the Renault Espace. The Megagamma introduced several concepts now commonplace in modern MPVs, including a compact, spacious, and highly versatile geometrically shaped interior with a flat floor. Its influence extended to subsequent concept cars like the Italdesign Capsula (1982), Maserati Buran (2000), and Proton EMAS (2010), all bearing Giugiaro’s signature. Despite generating significant interest from the press and public upon its debut, Fiat, Lancia’s parent company, failed to recognize its groundbreaking innovation, deeming it too risky for series production, even for demonstration purposes.
